P36 - Hawaii regional nowcast/forecast system
System domain of P36 (red framed box) Domain
Hawaiian Islands chain and EEZ; 15°- 35°N, 175°E-150°W
Objectives
To use and evaluate Global HYCOM and NCOM as boundary conditions for downscaling nowcasts and forecasts in island domains (initial focus on the Hawaiian Islands) for research and applications users using a suite of nested models for downscaling. Specifically, to support the establishment of a monitoring system for the coastal regions of the Pacific Islands; to provide nowcasts and predictions of the coastal sea state (sea level, currents, water temperature, salinity, and tracers); to evaluate the ability of the Global HYCOM system to produce the large-scale circulation characteristics in the region; and to determine the impact of local wind anomalies resulting from the interactions between high mountains and the trade winds on eddy variability in the lee of the islands.
Type: Near real-time monitoring and prediction, reanalysis, assessment of observational networks, research.
Operational aspects: Development of a potential real-time modeling system
Customers
Research and applications users
Funding aspect
NOAA funding available for modeling-system development
Downscaling strategy
Use Global HYCOM and NCOM at the lateral boundaries to initialize and force a suite of higher resolution nested models including HYCOM (primary focus), POM and ROMS.
Modelling strategy: The regional domain HYCOM (1/25°) is initialized and forced at the four lateral boundaries with solutions from the Global HYCOM (1/12°); the 1/25° regional HYCOM is used to initialize and further downscale to a single-island domain HYCOM at 1/100° resolution. POM and ROMS are used for further downscaling and include waves and tides.
Forcings: High-resolution, regional wind products are produced by UH collaborators
Variables estimated: 3-dimensional T,S,u,v and 2-dimensional SSH
Prediction range: Short period forecasts, 1-7 days, are planned when the global products with assimilation are available
| Why does this project need large-scale estimates? | Initial and boundary conditions for regional island domains |
| What for? | Boundary conditions for regional downscaling of nowcasts/forecasts |
| What particular GODAE estimates does this project use, how often, etc.? | Daily, Global HYCOM and NCOM fields in the project's domain. |
| Through which Modelling/Assimilation Center? | NRL, Stennis |
| Does the project have a verification/validation strategy which can help assess the impact of large-scale estimates? | Yes. A variety of model-data comparisons both in the offshore region and in the coastal domain including sea-level stations, HF radar, moorings, gliders, etc. |
Project status
1/25° (regional) and 1/100° (single island, Oahu) HYCOMs are implemented. Hindcast simulations have been performed for testing and to evaluate local, high-resolution wind products. Awaiting Global HYCOM and assimilation package to begin nowcast/forecast activities. POM is implemented for high-resolution, near-shore applications. ROMS is implemented for a regional evaluation. High-resolution, regional wind products are now produced by UH collaborators.
