3000 Argo floats – target achieved

( Last Updated: 08-01-2008 )

The target of Argo to build a global array of 3,000 free-drifting profiling floats that measure the temperature and salinity of the upper 2000 m of the ocean has been achieved. The 3000th float was deployed in the last week of October 2007.

Since deployment started in 2000, Argo has contributed enormously to the improvement of ocean forecasting by allowing continuous monitoring of the temperature, salinity and velocity of the upper ocean, with all data being relayed and made publicly available within hours after collection.

The future challenge is now to maintain this array of floats with the support of all contributing countries.
